This episode of The Sobering Podcast features South African hip-hop artist K.O, who dives deep into his numerous career reinventions, the challenges he faced during his toughest periods, the dynamics of his labels, and his plans for the future.
Constant Evolution: The Business of Reinvention
K.O views the need to constantly reinvent himself as a necessary business strategy. He compares it to the tech world, arguing that companies must evolve or risk becoming obsolete, citing the fate of Nokia versus the iPhone.
Toughest Period: He states the period between his first and second solo albums, SR1 and SR2, was the hardest. Seeking outside opinions led to a loss of confidence, compounded by the fallout of the Cash Time collapse.
"Solo Mission" Mindset: K.O expressed feeling "jaded" and not trusting his own fans ("tribe") due to a lack of public support during major controversies. This experience cemented his current mindset of being a "solo Mission" and fighting his own battles.
Cash Time vs. Skhanda World: A Tale of Two Labels
K.O provided an honest perspective on the business decisions and setbacks of both his labels:
Cash Time Collapse (K.O.'s View): K.O takes responsibility for the collapse. He admits he got "too busy" after Skhanda Republic 1 and allowed a culture where other artists depended on his A&R/production input. He also regrets his "pre-Internet" mindset, which meant he didn't control the narrative on social media, allowing negative stories to take hold.
Skhanda World Strategy: The parting of ways with some original Skhanda World members was explained as a corporate decision. This was influenced by a deal with Universal Music Group (UMG), which required the company to downsize based on the Return on Investment (ROI). He maintains that the friendship remains separate from the business bond.
Relationship with Zingah: K.O described his initial split with Zingah (formerly Smashis) as "tough love," necessary for Zingah to learn independence, but confirms they are now very close and speak daily.
The Future: New Music, Reality TV, and a Sonic Departure
K.O revealed several surprising future plans that speak to his ongoing reinvention:
SR3 - The Vulnerable Album: He considers Skhanda Republic 3 his favorite and most personal/vulnerable work. He intentionally opened up on the project to "humanize himself" and appeal to a wider, more relatable audience.
Reality Show: K.O is currently filming a reality show. This unexpected move is intended to help "elongate his story".
New Album: He hints that his next album will be a significant sonic departure, projecting it to be only about 10% rap.
